This weekend I came back to Buffalo; Oliver in tow. We discussed it in advance- Grandpa’s surgery meant this wasn’t going to be a kid-focused weekend like most trips to Western NY. Oli still wanted to go- he couldn’t picture not being there with family.
He’s only 10 but he’s sort of an old soul; he has endured four long days in the hospital with zero complaints. He is truly a study in gratitude and patience... a real chip off the old block. (I can hear my sisters gagging. I have some virtues, but gratitude and patience are not high on the list).
Despite moving from waiting room to waiting room— surgery, ICU, recovery— Oliver never complained. Instead, he thanked me for extra screen time. We were cooped up for days with little exercise, so he made the hospital stairs (and the waiting room closet) into games of hide & seek or tag with his ever-willing aunts.
Tucking him in the second second night, I told him how thankful I was for him, and how his great behavior was helping the grown ups be able to focus on grandpa’s recovery. Oliver snuggled closer, listing all the fun things he remembered from the day, and the special moments with grandma and grandpa.
When we woke the next morning, his aunts had returned to their families. He shared that “things are a little dull around here without Aunt Kristy and Aunt Melissa,” remembering aloud the fun walks to get coffee, the games of I Spy, and occasionally the “breaking the rules” at the hospital.
He’s my inspiration this week- I’m in awe of his compassion, gratitude and joy in the little moments.

Hugs for Grandpa’s “big guy.”
A quick escape to explore with his Aunts.
